This group of pictures is from kindergarten, the 1963-64 school year. Eyler Elementary is located in Carleton, MI, near Detroit. I only went to school for one year there, then we moved back to North Carolina.
What I remember best from this time is that the bus couldn't take the main road because of the clearance at a bridge over a small stream, so they took a dirt road that ran parallel to the main road. The bridge on that road was much higher than the road leading up on either side, so if you were in the back of the bus, you could bounce out of your seat and nearly hit the roof. Great fun.
My picture is really geeky. The photographer's crew gave all the kids combs (big mistake), so I basically was playing with my hair a bit before the picture was taken. I somehow look like an alien on a cheap sci-fi program.
The other thing that I remember from then is the Beatles becoming very popular. Older girls were goofy and annoying before that, but once the Beatles hit, they made even less sense. Sure, the music was good, but seeing your sister scream at the old black-and-white set when the Beatles are on makes you want to get rid of them. Can we give 'em away Mom-- can we? You gave away the kittens, and they were really cool.
